Global payment processor Nuvei will pay $4.85 million to settle US Federal Trade Commission charges, the FTC said on 4 September. The FTC says it processed payments for merchants it knew, or should have known, were deceiving consumers [1].
The FTC's complaint says Nuvei processed more than $30 million in consumer payments for Reimage, an offshore tech-support scam, from 2017 to 2023 [1].
The money will go to consumer redress. The commissioners voted 2-0 to file the complaint and the order in federal court in Arizona [1].
What it covers
Canada-based Nuvei Corporation and four subsidiaries, including a merchant-acquiring bank in Cyprus and its US arm, Nuvei Technologies [1].
The order bans Nuvei from processing for anyone selling tech-support services by telemarketing or through pop-up warnings about a device's security or performance [1].
It must screen and monitor its clients, and investigate any whose chargeback rates exceed the order's limits. It must also stop tactics that evade banks' and card networks' fraud monitoring, such as spreading a merchant's sales across accounts [1].
What it does not tell you
Whether Nuvei broke the law. The charges are the FTC's allegations, settled without a trial [1].
How many consumers lost money, or how much of the $4.85 million each will get [1].
