What happens to it

It is checked against the source, and if the error is real it is corrected where it stands. Nothing is quietly edited and nothing is taken down: the correction is dated and printed above the story or the figure it corrects, at the same address, so anybody who read the wrong version can see what changed and when. A story that cannot be corrected, because the document it rested on was itself wrong or withdrawn, is marked as withdrawn, with the reason, rather than deleted.

This has already happened, on one of the most quoted numbers in the field. The correction sits at the address that carried the error, written above the figure it replaced.

There is no schedule. A correction is made when the error is found, not on a calendar.

What makes a correction easy to act on

Every source here is graded, so a correction lands fastest when it carries the same things a source does:

• Which story or figure, by its address, or for the book by page or by the id printed beside it
• What it should say
• Where that comes from: a publisher and a locator, not a summary of one
• When it was measured or published, which is often different from when it was reported

A correction without a source is still worth sending. It just takes longer, because the check has to be done from scratch.

If you bought the book

Corrections to the book go to every buyer. They are not a paid upgrade and never will be: the book is sold on the claim that its figures are checkable, so charging you to be told that one of them was wrong would put the evidence behind a second payment.

How one reaches you depends on where you bought the book, and only because of what a store is willing to say about its customers.

If you bought through the checkout on this site, the correction is emailed to the address you bought with. There is nothing for you to do.

If you bought through one of the withdrawn listings on another store, no address for you exists here to send it to. Those stores do not pass a buyer’s email on to a publisher. That was their arrangement rather than ours, so the route around it is deliberately as short as we can make it: write to corrections@gradeone.press once, say where you bought it, and you are on the list for as long as corrections are made. Withdrawing a listing does not withdraw the promise made to anybody who bought through it.

No receipt, no order number, no proof of anything. Somebody willing to send an email in order to be told when a number was wrong is the reader the book was written for, and asking them to prove it would be a strange way to say thank you.

If the price of the book is what stands in the way, there is a route for that too, and it is not a discount code.

Closing a gap in the research

The gap register lists every question the first research project could not answer at the grade it requires. Some of those are marked closeable, which means a published source exists and nobody has compiled it.

If you know one, send it. Contributions with a source and a date go into the research and the next edition of the book, with credit, unless you would rather not be named.
