The Fine Print

Every Friday, the technology claims people keep repeating, this week’s and the ones that have gone round for years, each checked: against the document it came from, or against how the technology actually works.

An AI lab’s benchmark. “A study finds.” A company’s user count. A statistic everybody quoted. A tip everybody’s been told. Most of what gets repeated about technology was never checked by the people repeating it. The Fine Print checks it, and puts the two side by side.

Coming soon

Until then everything here is free, and the weekly newsletter sums up each week.

What each claim gets

  1. What was saidThe claim in plain words, as it was repeated, and how it spread. Nobody is named as having got it wrong.
  2. What settles itThe original’s own words, quoted, with the page, table or section they are in, and a link. Or, when no document settles it, how the technology actually works, explained so anyone who knows it can check.
  3. Its gradeEvery document is on the same five grades as every source here: a regulator’s record is not a company describing its own product.
  4. The differenceOne plain line putting the two side by side. No verdict words; the conclusion is yours.
  5. What it does not tell youThe limit that matters most, because every document and every explanation has one.

How it works

  • It arrives by email every Friday, and every issue is kept here for members.
  • The claims come from across technology: AI, business, rules and courts, security, work and the rest. Some are the week’s news; some have gone round for years and are still believed.
  • Each original is read in full, and the claim goes in only if the document says something the claim left out. Where no document settles a claim, the explanation is written so that anyone with the technical knowledge can check it.
  • Everything else here stays free for everybody: the news, the brief, the reports, the data and the weekly newsletter.

What it is not

It is not opinion and it is not an accusation. It says what a document says, or how the technology works, next to what was said about it, and leaves the conclusion to you. Nobody is named as having got it wrong, and the grade of each original is on the same scale as every source this publication uses.
