US employers in the information industry had 96,000 job openings at the end of July, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on 1 September. A year earlier there were 157,000 [1].
That is about 39% fewer, by our count from the release's table. In June 2026 there were 89,000 [1].
The industry's openings rate, open jobs as a share of jobs plus openings, fell from 5.2% in July 2025 to 3.3% [1].
Across the whole economy, openings were little changed at 7.3 million [1].
What it measures
Positions open on the last business day of the month, which the employer is actively recruiting for from outside [1].
The information industry covers publishing, including software publishers, film and sound, broadcasting, telecoms, data processing and hosting, and web search [1].
Hires in the industry were 68,000 in July, against 70,000 a year earlier [1].
What it does not tell you
Which roles were open. The survey counts openings by industry, not by job.
How final it is. July's figures are preliminary and will be revised [1].
Fit: many software and IT jobs are in other industries, such as computer systems design, which BLS counts in professional and business services [1].
